What A Blast!

The inaugural Bairnsdale Motor Expo lived up to all expectations over the weekend, the perfect weather encouraging visitors and local families alike to spend a few hours wandering around the vast array of cars, bikes, boats and trucks.

The promise of a truly family oriented event was just that, with a variety of entertainment that impressed everyone.

From the muted roar of well over 100 motorbikes entering the racecourse under police escort, to the thud of the rotor blades of the helicopter, or the occasional loud full-throated rev of a V8 plus, it was head swivelling, non-stop action throughout the day.

There were so many cars to look at (well over 400) that it was difficult to absorb them all. The impressive line-up of motorbikes was mind-boggling.

Cars from every vintage were lined up in gleaming splendour, sports cars sitting snugly beside old veterans, all polished to perfection, even a mini caravan, done out in retro style, the inside keeping faith to the period.

The auction generated plenty of bidders, while at 1pm came the overhead roar of the solitary Roulette from East Sale RAAF Base, the thrilling aerobatics had all eyes glued overhead, with the vertical roll-over leaving everyone gasping.

The police display was certainly an impressive one, the operations van interesting to wander through while the police vehicles on display gave everyone a chance to study all those instruments that can check your speed.

Jumping castles, face painting and the interesting rocker cover races provided plenty of fun while some of the older teenagers tried their skills on the dodgem cars.

Bands and singers kept the crowd entertained when they sought some relief from aching feet and the hot sun, relaxing under the umbrellas with a drink or lunch.

As the many raffles were drawn and the sun began its decline, the announcement came that Steve Nattrass had been awarded the ‘best volunteer’ for the show. Steve dedicated months of unstinting effort to help with the minute details and organisation of the very successful day.

The drags were a huge success on Saturday night with the crowd watchingdisplay vehicles execute amazing feats, one time ‘Bad News’ taking a mound high in the air on one wheel.

It was a small but appreciative crowd at the Paynesville Motor Cruiser Club on Saturday night to enjoy the country western sounds of Yvonne van Delden and her band. The five-piece group contained some very talented budding young songsters and musicians. There was young Luke Mastrocola on drums, 14-year-old Jess Porter and 16-yearold Tia Guillot singingand guitar, their future career as performers assured if Saturday night’s performance was anything to go by. And of course the very easy to listen to Yvonne herself as well as Andrew Thistlethwaite on bass guitar.

At the RSL a good size crowd turned out to enjoy the rock ‘n’ roll night with Ray Gibbs’s band, ‘Impact’. Plenty of dancing and laughter throughout the evening rounded off a great day. The drawing of the raffle was greeted with joy from the winner and moans from those who were hoping to win the four-day Bulls cruise.
